Preparing to Claim: Important Steps and Considerations

When you’re preparing to claim, there are important things to consider and tasks to complete, such as gathering your supporting documents. To streamline this process for you, Centrelink has compiled information on how to prepare for your claim

Claiming Benefits Online: The Preferred Method

The best way to claim benefits is online. To do so, you’ll need a Centrelink online account linked to myGov. If you don’t have a myGov account or a Centrelink online account, you’ll need to create them. For more information, click here

Identity Confirmation with Centrelink

You may need to confirm your identity with Centrelink before you start your claim. For more information, click here

Nominee Option for Centrelink Assistance

You can choose to designate another person to deal with Centrelink on your behalf. This person, known as the nominee, can perform any of the following tasks:

– Submit an online claim for you.

– Submit separate online claims for you and your partner.

– Submit a combined partner claim for you and your partner using a paper claim form.

Submitting a Combined Partner Claim for Age Pension

If you and your partner are both claiming Age Pension, you may be able to submit a combined partner claim online. The combined partner claim option only appears at the Review and Confirm stage of the claim. However, this option won’t appear if any of the following apply:

 – You’re in a crisis situation.

– You and your partner are registered for the Pension Bonus Scheme.

– You or your partner want to claim Age Pension for the blind.

 To use the combined partner claim option, all of the following conditions must apply before starting your claim:

 – You and your partner have your own myGov accounts linked to your own Centrelink online accounts.

– You both have access to electronic messaging.

– You show as a couple in the Relationship Status section of your online accounts.

– You are both Age Pension age or turning Age Pension age in the next 13 weeks.

 You will need to provide details of all income and assets, including bank accounts that you and your partner own. Once you’ve completed your part of the claim, your partner will receive a task to review in their online account. They must action this within 3 days of receiving it. Then either you or your partner can submit the combined partner claim

Claiming Age Pension: Online and Alternative Options

You can claim online if your Centrelink account is linked to myGov

If you can’t claim online, you have a few alternatives:

 – Print and complete the Claim for Age Pension and Pension Bonus form, along with the Income and Assets form.

– Make an appointment to visit a service center.

Claim Notification and Review Process with Centrelink

After you lodge the claim, Centrelink will send a letter with the result to either your:

  • myGov Inbox
  • Express Plus Centrelink mobile app.

If you don’t receive electronic letters, Centrelink will send you a letter in the mail.

If you believe Centrelink has made a mistake, you can ask for a review of their decision.
